Should I look at granite, marble or travertine?
Each type of stone (granite, marble and travertine) has general characteristics that emphasize their preferred application. For instance, marble and travertine are more susceptible to acids and scratching because they are softer than granite. Therefore, they are not generally the preferred choices for a kitchen. Granite stands up well to heat, cold and chemicals, and, therefore, works well in kitchens. Marble has traditionally been used in more formal settings and in bathrooms. Some granite colors can be quite formal as well, and granite is also being used more and more in bathrooms providing a unique look with outstanding success. Read more about stone.
Why are some slabs thicker than others?
Granite slabs come in two thicknesses: 2cm and 3cm. When 2cm stone is used, it is typical for the edge of the countertop to be finished with a strip of the stone laminated to the underside to give the appearance of a much thicker counter. When a 3cm stone is used, it is typical for the edge to be finished at the 3cm stone thickness, thus there is not a laminated piece on the edge.
What should I look for in color and pattern?
That is a matter of personal preference. There are many colors and shades as well as variations in color movement from uniform to wild with everything in between. Some people like the clean contemporary look a uniform black stone provides. Others like the uniqueness offered by wild movement in the pattern and color variety.
